Why didn't bears try to cover the distribution of points against the Saints? The NFL rule ended the game after TD

For some NFL fans, there are few meaningless touchdowns. The Bears appeared to score a goal in their wild card playoff game against the Saints on a Sunday, but those fans knew otherwise.

They were dizzy at the possibility of a January miracle after the TD. Then the NFL rulebook hit and dashed her hopes.

Translation: The Bears could have covered the point spread if they had scored two goals after scoring with no time left in the fourth quarter.

Chicago hit the clock when Mitchell Trubisky linked up with Jimmy Graham on a wild touchdown pass that brought the Bears deficit to 21-9. Pre-match betting on the competition was made with the saints favored by 11.

A few years ago the bears could have tried a PAT kick to make it an 11 point game, which gave Chicago bettors a boost, or two, to make it a 10 point game and those bettors to give a chance in the unlikely event of victory.

Neither happened on Sunday as the NFL changed the end-of-game conversion rule after Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs touchdown against the Saints in the 2018 playoffs. The teams in that game were called out of the locker room for an untimed game. The Vikings (-5.5) knelt to end a five point victory.

Rule 4, Section 8, Article 2 (c) of the rulebook sets out the new conditions:

(c) If a touchdown is performed on the last game of a period, the attempt must be made (except during a Sudden Death Period or
If a touchdown is scored during a down with time running out in the fourth period and a successful attempt the
Result of the game).

The league confirmed what happened to a tweet on the NFL Officiating Account.

Not all of Bears’ supporters were baffled by what happened. Those who added points for dissemination in the context of multiteam teasers took hold of a huge back door W.

@TheOddsFathers just got my fattest win ever. I had a teaser about the bears at +17. The last 3 minutes of that game were all it took me to win

The favorites were 2-0 against the Spread in Sunday afternoon’s games after underdogs covered all three wildcard games on Saturday. The ravens (-3.5) made money with the titans in the first game.
