David Hernandez had a lot to be thankful for on Thanksgiving this year. He was especially grateful for his mom, Elva, for supporting him and his four brothers.
“This woman gave everything for us,” he wrote on Facebook. “She is the most loving and caring person I know.”
So when she started experiencing kidney failure six years ago, David wanted to help the woman who’d done so much for him.
He got himself checked and found out he was a perfect kidney match with his mom. When she started dialysis two months ago, he made the decision that he would go through with the surgery and donate his kidney.
“She goes two to three times a week in the morning for four hours each day.
She then comes home drained, tired, and helpless and sleeps until four or five in the afternoon,” David said about her dialysis. “Seeing her suffer breaks my heart and everyone’s around us.”
On Thanksgiving 2017, David surprised his mom with the news. He wrote a letter and told his mom she needed to sign something. When she opened it, she couldn’t believe what it said.
Elva immediately broke down crying at her son’s generosity.
“I didn’t think, not even once, that my son was going to give me a kidney,” Elva told CBS Boston. “When I opened it, it was my son’s kidney with his name on it saying that he was going to donate his kidney.”
