When Joey Augusta was 14 months old, he contracted spinal meningitis. Joey was left with just 50% of his hearing — in his right ear.
However, at 31 years old, he received a life-changing implant.
Overcome with emotion, the man from Austin broke down at hearing the voices of his surgeon and family members. While most who receive the implant have trouble distinguishing voices at first, even male and female voices, Joey was quickly able to note who was speaking when.
As the audiologist began to read out the names of colors, Joey got a little mixed up, unable to repeat back the words he was hearing.
Within the next few tries, though, he was able to complete the task, breaking down once more.
Joey was taken aback by the new sounds and, of course, the new intimacy of being able to hear his loved ones.
“It was overwhelming to be able to hear things I’d never experienced before,” Joey told Caters News. “Just little things — like leaves blowing in the wind, a clock ticking, birds chirping. Everything was amazing.”
The implants will make communicating with those who can hear much easier. Technology has really come a long way!
“Finally, I didn’t have to rely on lipreading as much,” he said.
