In November 2019, a desperate and heartbroken woman contacted News 4 in Oklahoma saying her father-in-law had been scammed in a big way.
Willie Boyd is an Air Force veteran who was just about to be kicked out of his apartment in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
It all started after Willie suffered a stroke, leaving him with limited mobility. He claims the former manager of his apartment complex — where he has been living for the past six years — offered to help him run errands and keep his bills paid.
Willie trusted this woman. They spoke every day; he thought they were friends.
Then one day, the new apartment manager left a note on Willie’s door, saying he had only a few days to pay back the thousands of dollars he owed in back rent and fees.
Willie was in shock. He insists he has always paid his rent on time. So his concerned family started looking into his payment history, and a twisted scam began to unravel.
Thankfully, this story has a happy ending.
The folks from Veterans Corner, a nonprofit organization that assists military members, saw Willie’s story on News 4 and surprised him with a gift that left him sobbing tears of joy.
